Everything you need to know about voting!

Voting is one of the most important ways you can affect the future of our country – and your future. We have a responsibility to be engaged participants in our democracy. Cavaliers vote! Voting in the local elections can make all the difference and really have a greater impact on your everyday life. It is our local and state officials who create change that is felt in our community. From judges to sheriffs, comptrollers to mayors, county clerks to superintendents; state and local offices deserve just as much consideration as the president.

 

Voter Registration

Keep your voter registration up to date and register to vote at your municipal clerk’s office or register to vote online here. You can also register to vote in person at a polling place on:

  • August 13, 2024: Partisan Primary - Voter deadlines vary by state. A full list of WI voter deadlines are available here. Non-Wisconsin voter deadlines are available on www.vote411.org.
  • November 5, 2024: General Election - Voter deadlines vary by state. A full list of WI voter deadlines are available here & below.  
    • October 16, 2024: Voter Registration by Mail Deadline
    • October 16, 2024: Voter Registration Online Deadline
    • November 5, 2024: In-Person Voter Registration Deadline

What you need to register to vote:

  • A Drivers License or ID Card. Your Western Student ID functions as a voter ID if it is not expired.
  • Proof of Residence. Proof of residence documents must include the voter’s name and current residential address. The Wisconsin Elections Commission has a list of valid documents.

Absentee Ballot Voting

You must first register to vote or update your voter registration (if your address changed) if you plan to vote absentee. Then you can request an absentee ballot for the spring elections.

At myvote.wi.gov you can register to vote, check your voter registration status, find your polling place, see what's on your ballot, request an absentee ballot, and check provisional ballot status.

If you are a non-Wisconsin resident and would like to vote in your home state, you can visit vote411.org for information about registering and voting in your home state.

Vote Central Locations

For the 2024 General Election, Western has implemented Vote Central locations at our main campus and regional campuses to provide voter registration information and education. Feel free to stop by Vote Central to pick up info. Voter Guides are also available. You can always stop by The SPACE, located in the Student Success Center in Room 222 to inquire about voter registration or info or email thespace@westerntc.edu. You can also call the voter hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE to ask questions.    

Students Living in the Residence Hall

Students living in the Residence Hall will receive a proof of residency letter in their mailbox prior to the upcoming election to use when registering to vote. These letters can also be requested from the Student Life Office. The polling place for students living in the Residence Hall and wanting to vote in La Crosse is the La Crosse Public Library, located at 800 Main Street. Your Western Student ID can be used as a Voter ID if it isn’t expired.

Western Elections
As a Western student, you can also vote in Student Government elections or choose to run for an open position! This is a great way to have your voice be heard and to advocate for other students.
