Law Enforcement

Western offers a variety of in-service, advanced, and specialized law enforcement training classes. These courses provide the essential skills, knowledge, and resources necessary for law enforcement officers to stay current in your training.

Our Law Enforcement courses and programs offer you the opportunity to enhance and sharpen your skills in the areas of investigations, patrol, leadership, survival, and many others. Training courses incorporate realistic and practical approaches from experienced instructors.

Course Descriptions

720 LE Academy Physical Readiness Assessment

The physical readiness entrance assessment will be offered on the following dates at Western’s Public Safety Training Center – Sparta:

  • Saturday, March 18, 2017 – 9:30 a.m.
  • Saturday, April 22, 2017 – 9:30 a.m.

All police academy candidates and law enforcement recruits must complete and pass the police physical readiness test. The test must be completed at a DOJ certified law enforcement academy. This test will meet that standard. Candidates must be physically capable of running 1.5 miles, completing sit-ups, push-ups and various other tests of physical fitness. All candidates must complete a medical assessment prior to taking the physical readiness test. The medical assessment form must be completed and signed by a physician. Basic Jailer Academy – 160 hours

Date: March 27-April 21, 2017
Time: Monday-Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Location: Western’s Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Cost: $685.00 (Academy Tuition)
Materials: CPR Manual/Mask ($28.64 – cost subject to change)

Whether seeking the education to obtain an entry level position as a County Jailer or Correctional Officer in the State of Wisconsin, or are already employed by a County agency, Western’s Basic Jailer Academy offers students high-quality training through classroom and scenario-based instruction.

Instructor Training - Scenario

Dates: Thursday & Friday, April 6-7, 2017
Time: 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Where: Western Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Cost: $100.00 per person
Registration Deadline: Friday, March 31, 2017

This 16-hour course, taught by a Scenario Master Instructor Trainer, prepares instructor candidates for certification as an LESB Scenario Instructor. The course includes scenario training, testing, and force-on-force safety and training techniques. Must have completed the 32-hour CJ-IDC course before attending, OR be a currently-certified LESB instructor, and have 3 years full-time experience.

Pursuit Biennial Update

Date:  Tuesday, April 25, 2017
Time:  8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
Where:  Western Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Cost:  $25.00 per person
Registration Deadline:  Wednesday, April 19, 2017

This classroom only session will include areas of pursuit liability; understanding current policy and training standards on vehicle pursuits; identifying tactics used during pursuits and where they fall in the intervention options and a number of case law resulting from vehicle pursuits. The course satisfies the Law Enforcement Standards Board approved curriculum for the Pursuit Driving and Emergency Response update for July 01, 2015 through June 30, 2017.

Law Enforcement Academy – Summer 2017

Dates: June 26–October 27, 2017
Time: 7:45 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Where: Western Sparta Public Safety Training Facility

This is a 720-hour Certified Basic Recruit Academy (18 weeks) for persons seeking Wisconsin Law Enforcement certification. Costs include training, use of firearm/ammunition (if needed) and other related training items. Completed application forms should be returned by February 28, 2017 to be considered for a March interview. After February 28, applications will be accepted on a first-come basis. Completed applications should be returned to an Enrollment Advisor at the Welcome Center at the La Crosse Campus. For more information call the Public Safety office at 608-789-4747.

Instructor Training – Instructor Development Course

Dates:  July 25-28, 2017
Where:  Western Public Safety Training Center – Sparta Campus
Cost: $200.00 per person
Registration Deadline: Wednesday, July 19, 2017

Prepares criminal justice instructor-candidates to create a learning environment that supports learners. Competencies include planning and managing learning, training and evaluation methods, and delivering teaching scenarios. This curriculum is endorsed by the Law Enforcement Standards Board and is required of instructors seeking LESB certification. This is a pre-requisite course for all LESB approved specialized training courses.
