Law Enforcement

Western offers a variety of in-service, advanced, and specialized law enforcement training classes. These courses provide the essential skills, knowledge, and resources necessary for law enforcement officers to stay current in your training.

Our Law Enforcement courses and programs offer you the opportunity to enhance and sharpen your skills in the areas of investigations, patrol, leadership, survival, and many others. Training courses incorporate realistic and practical approaches from experienced instructors.

Course Descriptions

Instructor Training – Firearms Instructor Course

Dates: January 22-31, 2024
Location: Western Public Safety Training Center – Sparta Campus
Cost: $500.00 per person
Registration Deadline: Tuesday, January 16, 2024

This 64-hour course, taught by a Master Instructor Trainer, prepares instructor candidates for certification as a Handgun and Rifle Instructor. Content includes use of mini-red-dot sights (MRDS). Students need to have completed a 32-hour CJ-Instructor Development Course as a prerequisite for the Handgun and Rifle class OR be a currently certified LESB instructor and have 3 years full-time experience.

Law Enforcement Academy – Spring 2024

Dates: February 5-June 7, 2024
Time: 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Location: Western’s Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus

This is a 720-hour Certified Basic Recruit Academy (18 weeks) for persons seeking Wisconsin Law Enforcement certification. Costs include training, use of firearm/ammunition (if needed) and other related training items. For more information call the Public Safety office at 608-789-4747.

Instructor Training – Instructor Development Course

Dates: January 22-25, 2024
Cost: $225 per person
Location: Western’s Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Registration Deadline: Monday, January 15, 2024

Prepares criminal justice instructor-candidates to create a learning environment that supports learners. Competencies include planning and managing learning, training and evaluation methods and delivering teaching scenarios. This curriculum is endorsed by the Law Enforcement Standards Board and is required of instructors seeking LESB certification. This is a pre-requisite course for all LESB approved specialized training courses.

Professional Communications Instructor Course

Dates: Tuesday-Thursday, January 9-10-11, 2024
Time: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Cost: $200 per person
Location: Western’s Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Registration Deadline: Thursday, January 4, 2024

This 24-hour training program is designed to provide instructor candidates with the opportunity for Wisconsin LESB certification as a Professional Communication Skills LESB instructor. This certification is required for training at the recruit level and/or in-service level when utilizing Wisconsin's Law Enforcement Standards Board manuals and/or training curriculum. Must have completed the 32-hour CJ-IDC course before attending OR be a currently-certified LESB instructor & have 3-years full-time experience.
