Law Enforcement

Western offers a variety of in-service, advanced, and specialized law enforcement training classes. These courses provide the essential skills, knowledge, and resources necessary for law enforcement officers to stay current in your training.

Our Law Enforcement courses and programs offer you the opportunity to enhance and sharpen your skills in the areas of investigations, patrol, leadership, survival, and many others. Training courses incorporate realistic and practical approaches from experienced instructors.

Course Descriptions

720 LE Academy Physical Readiness Assessment

Date: Thursday, December 21, 2017
Time: 10:00 a.m.
Where: Western Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus

All police academy candidates and law enforcement recruits must complete and pass the police physical readiness test. The test must be completed at a DOJ certified law enforcement academy. This test will meet that standard. Candidates must be physically capable of running 1.5 miles, completing sit-ups, push-ups and various other tests of physical fitness. All candidates must complete a medical assessment prior to taking the physical readiness test. The medical assessment form must be completed and signed by a physician. POSC Instructor

Dates: Monday-Friday, January 8-19, 2018
Time: 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Where: Western Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Cost: $650.00 per person
Registration Deadline: Wednesday, January 3, 2018

This 80-hour course will certify successful students to instruct correctional officers and Jail Academy students in LESB’s Principles of Subject Control (POSC) curriculum. Attendees will be trained in effective teaching techniques and will experience intensive training in the tactics and skills included in POSC. Students need to have completed a 32-hour CJ-Instructor Development Course as a prerequisite for the POSC class.

Law Enforcement Academy – Spring 2018

Dates: January 8–May 11, 2018
Time: 7:45 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Where: Western Public Safety Training Center – Sparta Campus

This is a 720-hour Certified Basic Recruit Academy (18 weeks) for persons seeking Wisconsin Law Enforcement certification. Costs include training, use of firearm/ammunition (if needed), and other related training items. Completed application forms should be returned to an Enrollment Advisor at the La Crosse Campus Welcome Center by August 25, 2017. After August 25, applications will be accepted on a first-come basis. For more information, call the Public Safety office at 608-789-4747.

DAAT Instructor

Dates: Monday-Friday, February 5-20, 2018
Time: 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Where: Western Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Cost: $750.00 per person
Registration Deadline: Friday, January 26, 2018

This 96-hour course, taught by a Master Instructor Trainer, prepares instructor candidates for certification as a LESB DAAT instructor. Students must have completed the 32-hour CJ-IDC course before attending, OR be a currently-certified LESB instructor, and have 3 years full-time experience.

Instructor Training – Instructor Development Course

Dates:  February 20-23, 2018
Where:  Western Public Safety Training Center – Sparta Campus
Cost: $200.00 per person
Registration Deadline: Friday, February 9, 2018

Prepares criminal justice instructor-candidates to create a learning environment that supports learners. Competencies include planning and managing learning, training and evaluation methods and delivering teaching scenarios. This curriculum is endorsed by the Law Enforcement Standards Board and is required of instructors seeking LESB certification. This is a pre-requisite course for all LESB approved specialized training courses.

Firearms Qualification In-Service

Date: Two Offerings – Tuesday, March 13, 2018 and Wednesday, March 21, 2018
Time: 8:00 a.m.-Noon
Where: Western Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Cost: $25.00 per person
Registration Deadline: Friday, March 2, 2018

Covers familiarization with DOJ’s mandatory firearms qualification course. This program offers instruction to assist officers in shooting the WIDOJ qualification course. Officers should bring their duty belt and 150 rounds of pistol ammunition. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have met the DOJ requirement for annual firearms qualification.

Pursuit 2017-2019 Biennial In-Service

Date: Two Offerings – Tuesday, March 13, 2018 and Wednesday, March 21, 2018
Time: 12:30-4:30 p.m.
Where: Western Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Cost: $25.00 per person
Registration Deadline: Friday, March 2, 2018

This 4-hour 2017-2019 Pursuit Biennium training will address a number of issues affecting public and officer safety. It will include: reviewing basic EVOC skills that might be used during emergency response and/or pursuits, reviewing the steps for conducting a high-risk contact at the end of a pursuit, and reviewing how to conduct a non-traditional high-risk contact due to unusual position of the suspect vehicle following a PIT maneuver, moving roadblock, or crash.

Tactical Response Instructor

Basic Jailer Academy – 160 hours

Date: April 16-27 and resuming on May 14-25, 2018
Please note that 80 hours of the Jailer Academy will run April 16-27 and 80 hours will run May 14-25. There will be no classes held from April 28-May 13.
