Law Enforcement

Western offers a variety of in-service, advanced, and specialized law enforcement training classes. These courses provide the essential skills, knowledge, and resources necessary for law enforcement officers to stay current in your training.

Our Law Enforcement courses and programs offer you the opportunity to enhance and sharpen your skills in the areas of investigations, patrol, leadership, survival, and many others. Training courses incorporate realistic and practical approaches from experienced instructors.

Course Descriptions

Law Enforcement Academy – Spring 2019

Dates: January 7–May 10, 2019
Time: 7:45 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Location: Western Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus

This is a 720-hour Certified Basic Recruit Academy (18 weeks) for persons seeking Wisconsin Law Enforcement certification. Costs include training, use of firearm/ammunition (if needed) and other related training items. For more information call the Public Safety office at 608-789-4747.

720 LE Academy Physical Readiness Assessment

The physical readiness entrance assessment will be offered on the following dates at Western’s Public Safety Training Center – Sparta:

  • Tuesday, February 26, 2019 – 12:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 9, 2019 – 9:30 a.m.

All police academy candidates and law enforcement recruits must complete and pass the police physical readiness test. The test must be completed at a DOJ certified law enforcement academy. This test will meet that standard. Candidates must be physically capable of running 1.5 miles, completing sit-ups, push-ups and various other tests of physical fitness. All candidates must complete a medical assessment prior to taking the physical readiness test. The medical assessment form must be completed and signed by a physician. Instructor Development

Dates: February 26-March 1, 2019
Where: Western Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Cost: $200.00 per person
Registration Deadline: Friday, February 15, 2019

Prepares criminal justice instructor-candidates to create a learning environment that supports learners. Competencies include planning and managing learning, training and evaluation methods and delivering teaching scenarios. This curriculum is endorsed by the Law Enforcement Standards Board and is required of instructors seeking LESB certification. This is a pre-requisite course for all LESB approved specialized training courses.

Vehicle Contacts Instructor Training

Dates: Wednesday-Thursday, March 13-14, 2019
Time: 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Where: Western Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Cost: $140.00 per person
Registration Deadline: Wednesday, March 6, 2019

This 16-hour course prepares WI LESB certified officers to effectively administer and teach the vehicle contacts training program. Must have completed the 32-hour CJ-IDC course before attending OR be a currently certified LESB instructor and have 3 years of full time experience.

Scenario Instructor Training

Dates: Wednesday-Thursday, March 27-28, 2019
Time: 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Where: Western Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Cost: $100.00 per person
Registration Deadline: Friday, March 15, 2019

This 16-hour course, taught by a Scenario Master Instructor Trainer, prepares instructor candidates for certification as an LESB Scenario Instructor. The course includes scenario training, testing and force-on-force safety and training techniques. Must have completed the 32-hour CJ-IDC course before attending, or be a currently-certified LESB instructor, and have 3 years full-time experience.

EVOC Instructor Course

Dates: Monday thru Friday, May 13-17, 2019
Time: 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Where: Western Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Cost: $275.00 per person
Registration Deadline: Friday, May 3, 2019

This 40-hour course, taught by a Master Instructor Trainer, prepares instructor candidates for certification as an EVOC instructor. Students must have completed the 32-hour CJ-IDC course before attending, OR be a currently certified LESB instructor, and have 3 years full-time experience.

Basic Jailer Academy

This is the new 200-hour Academy

Date: July 8 – August 9, 2019
Time: Monday-Friday – 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Location: Western’s Public Safety Training Facility – Sparta Campus
Cost: $940.00 (Academy Tuition)
Materials: CPR Manual/Mask ($28.64 – cost subject to change)
Registration Deadline: Friday, June 21, 2019
