Western Adds Clay Target League and Powerlifting to Athletics

Wellness Center

LA CROSSE, Wis., April 4, 2024 – Western Technical College announced today the addition of clay target and powerlifting to its athletic programs beginning with the Fall 2024 term.

Clay Target: Individuals in this sport will play in the USA-Clay Target League. Students can participate by being enrolled either full or part-time. Participation includes one day per week that they shoot and record their scores for competition purposes. On the remaining days of the week, students will have the opportunity to practice on their own time or as a team.

Powerlifting: Individuals in this sport will play in the USA-Powerlifting League as a form of competitive weightlifting. Students can participate from any location while being enrolled either full-time or part-time. This sport will have a coach that guides training routines in preparation for various competitions throughout the year. Participants on the powerlifting team can choose to compete or simply be a member of a team that does not compete.

"These new program offerings were selected based on months of research and increasing popularity in our region and across the country. The new sports will allow for increased flexibility for our student-athletes to maximize student engagement,” said Athletic Manager Ryan Monroe. “These sports will be led by a head coach and allow students, whether full-time or part-time, to compete.”

Baseball, volleyball, and Esports will remain varsity sports that will compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). These sports still maintain full-time and 2.0 GPA eligibility status for those competing.
