LA CROSSE, Wis., July 23, 2024 – Western’s annual Cavalier Cupboard report from the department of Student Life, Equity, and Engagement shows use of Western’s on-campus food pantry, the Cavalier Cupboard, continues to grow.
The report showed the total amount served rose to 3682, an increase from 2,299 the year prior. In total, 389 households and individuals were served by the pantry, with 79 percent of usage was from repeat users. Peak usage occurred in January and February. When the pantry began in 2014, the total amount served was 727.
“We continue to reduce the stigma for students who are food insecure,” said Mitch Berry, Student Inclusion Specialist at Western Technical College. “A large part of that increase comes from awareness, but also the growing need and the realization that the Cupboard is here for everyone.”
The Cavalier Cupboard began in 2014 by a Western Technical College student who recognized the need to provide food for students. This year alone, the Cupboard was open for 350 days and run by eight student and staff volunteers. Since opening, the pantry has served 14,681 students and their families.
