LA CROSSE, Wis., August 23, 2019 – Western Technical College announces a number of new programs available to students for the upcoming academic year. Additional programs are pursued when a current or future workforce needs develops in Western’s 11-county district.

When considering new programs, the college conducts a deep analysis process called Developing a Curriculum, or DACUM. The process brings local employers together to determine major duties and related tasks of the occupation, look at trends in job opportunities and living wages, and develop curriculum to create successful programs. Other factors include labor specific market data, student interest, and the College’s resources and personnel. Following this process, the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) must approve the new programs.

New programs approved for fall include:

Automation Systems Technology: This associate degree program provides skills to individuals entering automation and robotics, including the setup, troubleshooting, repairs, and modifying programs in automated manufacturing lines.

Animal Science Technician: This technical diploma covers a broad overview of animal science, including reproduction and health. The program also includes nutrition, ration balancing, heat detection, disease prevention, and artificial insemination.

Robotic Welding and Fabrication Specialist: This technical diploma launches in the spring of 2020, and prepares students to properly program and operate welding robots. The program includes basic engineering principals of programming skills to create welding processes that meet specifications for various patterns, joint types, and positions.
