Massage Therapy
What is massage therapy?
According to the American Massage Therapy Association, massage is a hands-on manipulation of soft tissue and joints of the body and may include muscle, tendons and ligaments. Techniques may involve holding, causing movement, and/or applying pressure to the body.
How is it beneficial?
Massage therapy can provide a wealth of benefits. Research shows that massage can:
- Reduce heart-rate
- Help lower blood pressure
- Improve blood circulation, recovery time and immune system function
- Relax muscles
- Improve range of motion
- Increase endorphins
- Help manage stress
Considerations
Massage may be contraindicated for specific health conditions; therefore it is important that your therapist be aware of your health history and screen appropriately before performing massage. In some instances, permission from your physician may be required before services can be provided. Techniques We May Offer:
- Swedish: for generalized relaxation, dissolution of scar tissue adhesions, and improved circulation.
- Deep tissue: for chronic tension, increasing range of motion, improving posture and enhancing self-awareness.
- Trigger point or neuromuscular therapy: applies concentrated finger pressure to "trigger points" or "active knots" (painful irritated areas in muscles) to break cycles of spasm and pain.
- Sports massage: to help prevent athletic injury, keep the body flexible and heal the body should injury occur.
- Stretching: provides gentle relaxed movements which can invigorate the circulatory, respiratory and neuromuscular systems by increasing flexibility, enhancing performance, reducing injury, and keeping joints pliable.
- Pregnancy massage: can reduce pregnancy discomforts prenatally.
- Chair massage: massage of the upper body, while fully clothed and seated in a special portable chair.
- Reflexology: the application of pressure, stretch and movement to the feet and hands to affect the glands, organs and other parts of the body. Reflexologists view the feet and hands as a mirror image of the body and apply techniques to break up patterns of stress in other areas of the body. It can be performed in a 30- or 60-minute session or combined with an overall massage.
