Did you know…

The IRA Charitable Rollover tax incentive, which is available through 2009, allows individuals aged 70½ and older to donate up to $100,000 from their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and Roth IRAs to public charities without having to count the distributions as taxable income.

  • The Individual Retirement Account (IRA) provision has been extended to include gifts made retroactive to Jan. 1, 2008 and will apply to gifts made from that date through Dec. 31, 2009
  • The provision exempts from taxable income any funds transferred (“rolled over”) from an IRA to a charitable organization
  • Eligible IRA owners can take advantage of this provision, regardless of whether they itemize their deductions
  • In addition, the donations are not limited by adjusted gross income percentages
  • If you are required to receive a minimum distribution from your IRA and you do not need the money for personal use, consider using those funds as a charitable gift

You may qualify if:

  • You are 70 ½ or older.
  • Your IRA gifts total $100,000 or less each year in 2008 and 2009
  • You transfer funds directly from an IRA to a qualifying charitable organization
